Q:
What is the wave driver for Win98?
A:
First off, the term "Wavedriver" gets confusing in our situation because it really is used to mean 2 things. The "W98 Wavedriver" install that we include on the LE CD and that is available on our website includes more than just the wavedriver. In fact it includes all of the following:1. DAL & DSI, which talk directly to our hardware. 2. DirectIO.dll, which provides a pleasant C++ interface to DAL and DSI. This interface is used by LE and by third parties to access our hardware. 3. The "wavedriver" which adds a layer on top of DirectIO.dll that conforms to the Microsoft Wavedriver standard. So you do not want to "de-install" the entire W98 Wavedriver because the Windows de-installer will remove all of the above stuff. Then of course nothing would work. However it might be helpful to just remove #3 (The wavedriver--see why this is confusing?). This would still allow LE and other DirectIO apps to run, but it would not allow generic wavedriver apps to run.Unfortunately, just removing #3 is not as easy as it sounds. It requires you to rename the file "Digi16.dll" to something else (anything is fine). But you can't do this when Windows is running because it will tell you the file is in use, so you'll have to boot into DOS and rename it there. Fun.Another option is to simply disable the wavedriver in the multimedia control panel. This is less drastic than removing the wavedriver. So maybe suggest that they try disabling it first, and if that doesn't work, try removing it completely and see what happens. This info is probably not worth posting on the DUC unless we discover that in fact it is helping a lot of people. However on an individual level if you run out of things to try, it's worth trying.Oh, and one other thing, the NT Wavedriver situation is COMPLETELY different...
