The "Avid Compatibility" check box is not in the "Compatibility" page of the Pro Tools preferences.

This is correct starting in Pro Tools version 5.1.3. It can now be selected in the "Export selected as files..." dialogue which can be found under the "Audio" menu at the top of the audio region bin of the Edit window.
