Pro Audio Support

Q:
If Pro Tools crashes when recording, it creates audio files with large sizes, sometimes as much as a few gigabytes (GB).

A:
This is typical behavior if Pro Tools crashes when a track(s) is record enabled. When you begin recording on an audio track, Pro Tools will "search" the selected drive ( selected in the Disk Allocation option under the Setups menu) for available disk space to record to. An "end of file" is written when you hit stop, if a crash occurs before stop is hit no end of file is written and all available disk space may be used by a bogus file (one file per record enabled track). These files are normally about 2 gigs each in size (this is a Mac OS thing, another story)If the Pro Tools preference "Open Ended Record Allocation" is set to all available space, Pro Tools will attempt allocate all available drive space. In most cases, it is best to choose the other option in this preference "Limit to: x minutes" with x being a number like 20 or 30. This will put a 20 or 30 minute time length on any record pass, of course, if you need to record longer than that for any single pass then increase this number. Having this preference set will "cap" how much drive space Pro Tools is going to allocate.Limiting drive allocation space is a good idea especially if you have large drives that are empty or have a large amount of space available.Another way to do this is to make a selection starting and ending where you want your record pass to start and stop. This will allocate only as much drive space as needed for that selection. The most common cause of Pro Tools crashes during recording is drive problems including SCSI issues, fragmented drives, hard drive drivers, lack of SCSI termination, etc.
