Even when using direct outs, you're still using a "n x 2" mixer for each output pair. In this case, each mixer has only a single input (or 2 if a stereo track). So, the same math is applied as if you had just set up a single track and routed to output 1-2, which is a multiply to a 56-bit result, then dithered back to 24-bit outputs.
