Q:
MOTU Issue: Korg N1, N5, NS5R Setups
A:
The Korg N1, N5, and NS5R are all 32 part multitimbral devices. They require two different FreeMIDI configurations, depending on what kind of application you are running. One setup is for use with Digital Performer/Performer as a 32-part multitimbral keyboard/module. The other setup is for use with Unisyn. This second setup is required because in a multiport interface connection, SysEx bulk dumps do not transfer properly.
32 Part Multitimbral/Sequencer Setup 1. Make a direct connection from theN1's built-in serial port to the Mac's printer or modem port. In this example I'll use an N1 on the modem port. 2. In FreeMIDI, choose Update Interfaces from the Configuration menu. Manually set the modem port to MIDI Time Piece. 3. Go to MIDI>Interface Settings and set the modem port to 1MHz. 4. Create two N1's, and attach one to MIDI port two and the other to MIDI port three. Do NOT connect anything to port one. 5. Save your FreeMIDI Configuration as "N1 Sequencing Setup" and quit FreeMIDI. You will now be able to choose between N1 1-16 for channels 1-16 and N1(2) 1-16 for channels 17-32. Unisyn 1.5 and Unisyn/Korg Setup 1. Make a direct connection between the N1's built-in serial port to the modem port. 2. In FreeMIDI, go to Configuration>Update Interfaces. Have FreeMIDI scan the modem port; it will come back as a Standard Interface. 3. From the Configuration menu, choose Create Device. Create a Korg N1 connected to the Standard Interface. 4. Save your FreeMIDI Configuration as "N1 Unisyn Setup" and quit FreeMIDI. 5. In Unisyn's Module window, open the Global Patch Edit window (this is done by double-clicking on "Global" in the Modules window. 6. Make sure that Handshaking is set to On. Before you run Digital Performer, open "N1 Sequencing Setup." The most recently used FreeMIDI setup will update FreeMIDI's preference file and it will use that setup when launcing Digital Performer. So, the same is also true for Unisyn. Before you run Unisyn, open the "N1 Unisyn Setup."
