Q:
Setting up the Tascam FW-1884 to work as a HUI control surface in ProTools.
A:
Be sure to download and install the latest FW-1884 drivers from tascam.com (as of this posting v1.10 for Mac OSX).
This combination has been tested with ProTools LE 6.2.3 running Mac OS 10.3.2 . 1. Launch the FW-1884 Manager from Mac HD > Applications. 2. In the System page, set the "Control Protocol" menu to "HUI Emulation." Then simply close the FW-1884 Manager. 3. Launch ProTools and open a session (or make a new session and create a few tracks). 4. Go to the SETUP menu in ProTools and choose "Edit Midi Studio Setup". This will launch AMS (Audio MIDI Setup). In the MIDI Devices page, make sure the FW-1884 automatically appears there. Then simply quit AMS. 5. In ProTools, go to the MIDI menu and select "input devices". Make sure that FW-1884 ports are selected. Then click OK. 6. Go the SETUP menu and choose Peripherals. In the MIDI Controllers page, set #1 to "HUI". Set the "receive from" and "send to" to FW-1884 Control Port. 7. Click OK in peripherals, and the FW1884 should come online with ProTools. * Make sure that the "computer" light is illuminated on the FW-1884 control surface.

When I select the B4 in the usual instrument channel it appears, but creates a terrible distorted droning sound. Visually the plug in is fine, and responds to midi input; sonically there is no reponse to midi. If I select a different audio instrument, or arrange track, the noise disappears, but as soon as I re-select it, it comes back. As it stands, the instrument is unusable - I'd like your advice as to how to solve this problem. What kind of memory will work in my FantomX? I'm attempting to transfer AIFF (or WAV) files from my Computer to my VSynth via USB, but when I attempt to load the files into the Sampling page, the Vsynth tells me that the files are illegal. Why? "No record volumes designated" when trying to record in Pro Tools 6.0. All volumes show up as Transfer ("T") in the Workspace browser and cannot be changed to Playback ("P") or Record ("R"). The error "'Drive X' can not be designated as an audio record drive because it is not a valid audio volume" is posted in Pro Tools for OS X.
