When I back up my Yamaha Motif XS series keyboard to a USB flash drive the resulting file is only 1.6 Megabytes. Is this the correct file size for a entire backup of the system?

Yes it is. Remember that this is just a data file back that is a refernce for the system. It is not evey sound itself but rather the data that is needed to reload it from defaults. The Yamaha file system is very efficient and though this may seem unusally small, it is the correct file size.
